〈Haenyeo Detective Hong Seol-rok〉 tells the story of the haenyeo(female divers) who guard the seas of Jeju. Inspired by the world-beloved novel Sherlock Holmes, it is a Korean-style mystery that combines pansori, folk songs, and performances by a traditional Korean music band. Set during the Japanese colonial period, it portrays the great struggle of the women of Jeju who fought to protect their right to survive against a haenyeo fishery cooperative that colluded with the Japanese to drive down seafood prices and exploit the haenyeo. The courage and solidarity of the Jeju haenyeo, who endured times as harsh as the rough sea, are brought back to life through sound, movement, and music. By summoning once more the long-hidden voices of the haenyeo, it makes for a meaningful stage that delivers both the fun of a mystery and historical significance.
