There is a fate that pulls you closer the harder you fight. And there is a man walking blindly toward a devastating truth. Sophocles' masterpiece tragedy 'Oedipus Rex' is reborn as the National Changgeuk Company of Korea's newest production, 〈Oedipus〉, unfolding a story where choices made to escape a predetermined path return as unforeseen consequences, and hidden truths upend the lives of every character. Following its successful streak of adapting Western classics like 〈Lear〉 and 〈The Merchant of Venice〉 into the language of changgeuk, the company now introduces a female Oedipus to reframe this familiar narrative through a new lens. Built on playwright Bae Sam-sik's text and amplified by Jang Seo-yoon's pansori composition, this production vividly carves the characters' inner turmoil into the music and staging as they stand before the whirlwind of fate.
