The scenery of a forgotten pavilion awakens once more. 〈Gathering at Huigyeongnu Pavilion〉 is a theatrical production inspired by the historic painting of the same name, which is designated as a Treasure of South Korea. The story follows classical scholars who passed the state civil service examination as they reunite after 20 years at Huigyeongnu, the iconic pavilion of the Gwangju region during the Joseon Dynasty. This celebratory gathering is brought to life on a dynamic, multi-dimensional stage, seamlessly blending traditional Korean song, dance, folk theater, and striking sensory imagery. Rooted in scenes from historical records, this production by Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City Changguek Company allows intangible memories and ancient landscapes to blossom into contemporary art. It showcases the continuous evolution and expansion of traditional arts while presenting exciting new possibilities for Gwangju’s performing arts scene.
