NDCK Next Generation Project

An extraordinary imagination about the next Korean dance!
Next Step is a new performance featuring those who know the boundless potential and value of Korean dance better than anyone. Three different works by three choreographers Chung So-yeon, Kim Byung-jo and Lee Jae-hwa are presented on one stage; They have acquired a wide spectrum of artistry through collaborations with great masters of Korean traditional dance, renowned foreign choreographers and various unique artists. Next Step is an attempt to create a different kind of ‘Korean dance’ through the process of analyzing, deconstructing and reinterpreting tradition from the own perspective and movement of Korean dancers. Next-generation choreographers from the National Dance Company of Korea will showcase passionate, imaginative and extraordinary performances of three different colors.

The National Dance Company of Korea has reinterpreted and modernized Korean dance through various works with different choreographers. Dancers of NDCK have constantly been finding plans for Korean dance interacting with the audience. With this trend, the
project “Next Step” which discovers the next generation of choreographers was started to give an opportunity of creation for the members of NDCK and nurture the future choreographers. The three members, So-Yeon Chung, Byung-Jo Kim, and Jae-Hwa Lee,
were credited for their capabilities on the evaluation 2017 and selected for the project. Their works have been supported under the organized production system by direction, stage, music, and costume. Each piece will be 30 minutes long and unveil this March.
So-Yeon Chung will present a new piece of work on the theme of syncopation capturing the unpredictable moments in the music and dance through increasing the meaning of subject. Byung-Jo Kim will tell the audience about the life of dancers watched inside
the NDCK where various dancers of all ages cooperate. Jae-Hwa Lee, one of the young generation of dancers, will show the diverse variations of rhythm based on the Chilchae rhythm of nongak using dance, music, and pansori. The three performances with
different colors will deliver the enthusiastic answers for the shortage of choreographers.
