The forms and styles of changgeuk and ‘Lee Ja-ram’ merge, evolving in a whole new genre!
National Changgeuk Company of Korea gets another movement for change into gear, under the motto of ‘new changgeuk’. It is launching into collaboration with young artists in order to absorb the sensibilities and changes of our time more deftly into changgeuk. Different Angle on Changgeuk of National Changgeuk Company of Korea tries to invite young contemporary artists who have long established their unique styles and present quality works replete with new interpretations and contemporary takes on changgeuk. The first artist of Different Angle on Changgeuk is Lee Ja-ram, who will direct her first changgeuk piece. With her imagination that knows no border of genres, she is going to freely transform the body that pansori and changgeuk possess. Exploring how the story of pansori told by one singer as first-person narrator could be morphed within changgeuk, and how the audience might receive it differently in terms of music, Lee will densely incorporate the storytelling aesthetics of pansori into modern changgeuk. The structure will be simplified and the cast will be minimized, including the instrumentalists. The contemporary genres that are changgeuk and ‘Lee Ja-ram’ are joining to merge into a new genre in contemporary changgeuk!
