National Changgeuk Company of Korea
Relentlessly asking the question, “What is changgeuk?” to create today’s changgeuk
National Changgeuk Company of Korea is a resident art company under the National Theater of Korea that specializes in “changgeuk”, a musical play based on pansori, a Korean traditional style of music, since its foundation in 1962. For 56 years, it has staged traditional-style changgeuk that genuinely follows the singing and dialogue of the five pansori (Chunhyangga, Simcheongga, Heungboga, Sugungga and Jeokbyeokga), forming a group of enthusiasts. Since the introduction of the repertory seasons in 2012, various themes and elements that were normally dealt with in changgeuk have been made into changgeuk by renowned directors in Korea and overseas. With quite a different direction than in the past, interest in changgeuk has increased more than ever and it has since taken the performing world by storm. At the same time, the National Changgeuk Company of Korea not only is in continuous pursuit of “seven pansori base restoration series” that turns the seven forgotten bases of pansori into changgeuk but also strives to preserve pansori itself, which is the foundation of changgeuk, evidenced by more than 30 years of <The Complete Performance of Pansori> formed by master singers from around the country. In the future, the National Changgeuk Company of Korea will continue to communicate with various audiences of today’s generation and, at the same time, heighten the status of our very own changgeuk around the world.
